edit OS Installation Problem?
  • Firstly, i have just finished building my PC and i have looked around the bios. I wasn't sure what to do next, but in my motherboard manual it said to install my OS. I got the disk out but there were not many instructions because i bought it oem, so i just put the disk in when my computer prompted me to put in some media. Its starts to say windows loading files and a gray bar fills up at the bottom. After this the screen goes blank and the cd stops whirring, i've waited ages for something to happen but it doesn't. I have put my cd drive first in boot order followed by my hard drive which are both SATA. Any ideas what i have done wrong?

  • Okay so your computer is an OEM or not? Cuz OEM comps come with pre-loaded OS.. If you made your computer & are trying to load OEM OS, it'll not work. The installation files will check if the mainboard & BIOS are for OEM or not, if not, the setup will abort.
Which version of Windows are you trying to load? & I think this is the 6th time in the last hour or so that I advised someone to get a Linux Live CD .. (Ironic cuz i am running XP myself, but yes I do have Ubuntu 32 & 64 Bit Live CD's as well as the fedora 9 Live CD just in case I change my mind or need them;-) )

  • If you are not getting the message "Press any key to boot from CD"
then your windows disk is not bootable or your cd is not visible to the system. (check the jumpers on CD & HDD if applicable)

Besides, OEM Windows keys are only valid on the machine it was supplied with. If you do manage to install, the key will probably fail to activate and you will have to activate over the phone. (good luck with that)

  • Not enough info. But there are many, many things you could be doing wrong.

  • may be your XP CD is wrong or may be your CD/DVD drive corrupted
    make sure of it
try to borrow a CD/DVD drive of your friend.....

  • Are you positive your disk is bootable? Also as your machine boots through the post messages, you should see a message saying press any key to boot from cd..If you don't see this I'd say your boot order is still not right. Go back to the bios setup and check, make sure to save before exiting.
